Curriculum

After graduating from Monash University, Melbourne in 1968 and serving his formative years in Medicine at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Professor Marks embarked on a career in dermatology achieving Membership of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1972, and becoming a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 1974. He worked as the Overseas Registrar at St John’s Hospital in London (1975 – 1976) before returning to practise clinical and academic dermatology at Monash University/Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and subsequently joining the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria in 1986 to pursue his interests in epidemiology and public health.

Professor Marks returned to practise in dermatology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne in 1991. In 1995 he was appointed Director of Dermatology and the inaugural Professor of Dermatology at the University of Melbourne. While developing the academic Department of Dermatology at St Vincent’s Hospital, with its tripartite emphasis on service, education and research, Professor Marks continued his public health activities against skin cancer with the Australian Cancer Society; was President of the World Congress of Dermatology in Sydney (1997); was appointed Treasurer (1997 – 2002) and then President of The International League of Dermatological Societies (2002 -2007); and performed the role of Director of Research and Training at the Skin and Cancer Foundation of Victoria.

In 2005 he completed his 10 year term as Professor/Director of Dermatology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. His current activities include Professorial Fellow in Dermatology, the University of Melbourne; Honorary Visiting Dermatologist, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne; and Director of Skin Cancer, Skin and Cancer Foundation, Victoria.

In the 2002 Queen’s Birthday Australian Honours, Professor Marks was made a Member in the Order of Australia.
